DEDICATION CEREMONY OF FLAG POLE AT

THE JOHN HESS SOFTBALL COMPLEX

IN HONOR OF

ROY F. HARPSTER

April 11, 1934 – June 27, 2014

A ceremony to officially dedicate a new flagpole and plaque in memory of Roy F. Harpster for community service for Harris Township was held Saturday, October 2, 2014 at The John Hess Softball Complex in State College, PA.

Roy served the ASA of PA as Umpire in Chief for District 8 for 33 years and served the ASA of PA as the Deputy Umpire in Chief for many years.  Upon Roy’s retirement from active umpiring and State Deputy UIC he was honored with the position of State Deputy UIC Emeritus for ASA of PA.

Roy was inducted into the Pennsylvania ASA Hall of Fame in 1998 and the National Indicator Fraternity for Umpires in 1989.  Roy was responsible for organizing the first PA State Softball umpires training clinic and conducted many umpire training clinics throughout his years with ASA.

Not only was Roy actively involved in ASA until his death but served for 13 years on the Centre Region Parks and Recreation Authority Board for Harris Township.  During those years Roy was involved with the start of the community’s substantial investments in improved facilities throughout the township, at the John Ness Softball Complex and at the new Oak Hall Regional Park that will be open for softball events in 2015.
